Primed for success

Your resin prints have arrived. You’ve sorted the parts, washed them, and glued them together, pinning where necessary.

What next?

At Fields of Mars we always recommend priming your minis, whether they are printed, spin-cast, or injection-molded.

Priming, also referred to as undercoating, is something of an “under-layer” of paint which has a dual function. The first is to provide a surface to which acrylic hobby paints can better adhere to. The second is to provide a basis of color to our miniature, helping us save time during painting.

Of course the above is impacted by primer type and color, so feel free to experiment with them and find what works for you. Professional painters have provided a wealth of content online on the subject.

In addition, priming printed miniatures has another subtle benefit. Due to the manufacturing process, some fine lines may be seen at some angles in specific lighting conditions, or under magnification. These are often so small that they are effectively unnoticeable, but a primer coat on the miniature can further conceal these, as the thickness of the paint layer smooths any such marks.

Just be sure to not apply too much!
